2008 DSLR Review - The Hits and Misses of the Year

2008 was an interesting year for DSLR's and photographers in general, even if you ignore the ultra-high-end announcements from Leica, Hassleblad and Red. The three main players in the DSLR space (Nikon and Canon, each with around 40% market share and Sony with around 10%) all started milestone cameras. Below we present in detail their hits and misses.

Nikon

After their pioneering publications in 2007 with the Nikon D3 and D300, they set the bar highfor the year 2008, but generally does not disappoint with four new committees:

Nikon D60

Although not revolutionary, the Nikon D60 replaces the D40x in Nikon's consumer lineup, into a smaller, better package had made it one of the smallest and lightest DSLR 's ever.

Nikon D700

Coming almost a complete surprise, the Nikon D700 was launched in mid-summer, with the 12-megapixel full-frame sensor from the flagship D3, but with a body like the D300. At$ 3,000, the camera was Nikon's commitment to FX, and the camera is now the choice for many professionals who do not need weather sealing or the advanced features of the D3 (for example) wedding photographers.

But within months of its release, came out of the Sony A900 with a 24 megapixel full-frame sensor for the same MSRP and the Canon 5D Mark II came with a 21-megapixel full-frame sensor and 1080p HD video for $ 2700.

While the D700 is still theComplete Package (best autofocus, argue the best dosage and for the vast majority, 12 megapixels much), it has come under strong pressure from the higher-megapixel competitors. Only four months after their release, prices have fallen 25% street, down to the range $ 2300 for a U.S. model.

Nikon D90

Instead of the D80 has Nikon's lineup, the Nikon D90 the sensor from the renowned D300, has slightly improved on her video and she packed into a smaller, lighter bodywith scene modes, and a basic autofocus and metering.

The Nikon D90 was the world's first DSLR HD video capture function to his 720p/24 fps mode. But a few weeks later, Canon announced a much more complete video, with its Canon 5D Mark II, video, and remains the weakest feature on the D90 lacks autofocus and only give very little control over key elements such exposure.

At $ 999, which helped companies to Nikon's consumer lineup, through the creation of aideal advanced consumer DSLR in the Nikon D90.

Nikon D3x

After years of rumors, Nikon finally announced that the high-megapixel camera, the 24-megapixel Nikon D3x.

The camera immediately resulted in a backlash, with its $ 8000 price point was the time of publication about double the price of the Nikon D3. This is the only noise was fueled further when she revealed the only significant differences between the D3 and D3x were the sensorand a slightly improved EXPEED processor, with the fact Sony can a DSLR with the same size / megapixel sensor for only 3,000 U.S. dollars to make.

This camera is all to the studio / landscape photographers, and first tests have shown that the sensor cleaner at high ISO's than the Sony (but similar) with the 5D Mark II, which has fewer megapixels. So, as long as it is clearly an impressive camera, remains to be seen to be justified and in fact, many photographersthe price tag.

Canon

Besides a few DSLR's, can have two big releases in 2008.

Canon EOS 50D

The 40D, featured the Canon 50D Replacing a 15-megapixel sensor 1.6 crop, making it the highest pixel density available today, (equivalent to a 39-megapixel full-frame sensor).

But the first point was not particularly positive. Because of the high pixel density, the camera suffers more from the effects of diffraction, not have the high ISO capability of many hoped it would, and outlines the issues with lenses longer than any predecessor. Nevertheless, it remains a solid camera at the current price of just over $ 1,000.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Probably the most important release of the year, offers the Canon 5D replacement of a 21-megapixel full-frame sensor, ISO functions like the new Nikon D3x, and it was the first DSLR full 1080p HD video capture function. Despitesome initial problems (like the infamous "black dot" problem), for $ 2700 Canon offers an amazing feature set, and seems a house with what is probably the best prosumer package on the market today and have taken steps to run .

Sony

After solidification of the consumer lineup, Sony went to the prosumer market with the Sony A900 with a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor for under 3,000 U.S. dollars.

Sony A900

The camera lacks basicFeatures about today's expected DSLR's like Live View, but the next camera with 24 megapixels to get is the $ 8000 Nikon D3x. However, the greatest competition is coming from the Canon 5D Mark II, which has a slightly lower resolution to 21 megapixels, but more than made up for it with its lower $ 2,700 price tag, full 1080p HD video mode and features like Live View.

While clearly an impressive camera to a stable price point, if you do not really need the higher resolution, it would be verydifficult to get the Sony in the canyon.

Abstract

With groundbreaking cameras Nikon D3x, Nikon D90, Canon 50D and Canon 5D Mark II, 2008 consolidated full-frame sensors on the market, witnessed a continued push towards higher megapixels, and saw the introduction of video-on-DSLR s. "

We are pleased to be 2009, a interesting year. With adverse economic conditions and fierce competition for market share, we should see prices fall, and hassuch as video-style make for some interesting, if not groundbreaking cameras in the near future.
